Sphagnum Moss, 2025 (Part of The Bog Beings series - a collection inspired by moorlands and bogs - the ecology of their plant community and the importance of their restoration.)
Sphagnum mosses are one of the primary peat-forming plants, thriving in wet, nutrient-poor environments, such as uplands and bogs. By holding water in specialised hyaline cells and acidifying their environment, they slow the decomposition process of organic matter. Over thousands of years, this process forms peat, one of Earth's largest stores of carbon.
